Rajasthan's desert landscape is punctuated by forts built across centuries of shifting alliances between regional rulers, each structure reflecting the defensive priorities and artistic tastes of its era. A circuit through the state typically links several of these strongholds, moving between sandstone ramparts that rise directly from rock and desert.
Jaipur's hilltop forts offer an accessible starting point, their walls extending for kilometres across ridgelines that once guarded the city below. Further west, Jodhpur's fort commands the skyline above the blue washed old town, its scale and craftsmanship still evident in carved sandstone screens and expansive courtyards.
Jaisalmer, deeper into the desert, presents something different again: a living fort still inhabited, its narrow lanes home to shops and residences within walls built from golden sandstone that shifts colour with the changing light. Each fort along the route tells a distinct chapter of Rajasthan's history rather than repeating the last.
Travelling this circuit rewards patience, since distances between cities can be considerable across open desert terrain. The reward is a layered understanding of Rajasthani architecture, where each fort's design reveals as much about strategy and status as it does about craftsmanship, patronage and shifting regional power.
