Kashmir's valley has long been described in terms bordering on the poetic, and a route through it explains why the comparisons persist. Framed by the Himalayas on all sides, the valley floor holds lakes, orchards and terraced fields that shift character with each season, from spring blossom to autumn gold.
Srinagar typically anchors any journey through the region, its houseboats moored along Dal Lake offering a distinctive way to experience the water dominated geography. Shikara boats glide between floating gardens, connecting the city's older quarters to quieter stretches of the lake favoured for their calm.
Beyond Srinagar, routes climb toward hill towns known historically as retreats from summer heat, their meadows and pine forests offering a cooler, greener contrast to the valley floor. Saffron fields near Pampore add another layer, their pale purple blooms a brief but celebrated seasonal sight each autumn.
Handicrafts thread throughout the journey as well, from woven pashmina shawls to intricately carved walnut wood, traditions maintained by artisan families for generations. A route through Kashmir is as much about these crafts and their makers as it is about the valley's celebrated natural scenery.
